Mark Nagler, Ph.D.
Biographical
Sketch
Mark Nagler was born with Cerebral Palsy. He did not learn to walk until he was five
years old and has never been able to write.
His parents were powerful advocates who insisted that their son have a
fully integrated public school education at a time when most students with his
level of disabilities were institutionalized.
In spite of his disabilities he was able to earn a Bachelor of Arts
degree from the University of British Columbia, a Master=s degree from the University of
Chicago, and a PhD from Stirling University in Great Britain.
Professor Nagler taught for four years at McMaster University and then
embarked on a distinguished twenty nine year career at Renison College,
University of Waterloo.
As an academic he is credited with authoring the first text in
Disability Studies which was adopted by 169 universities around the world. He has also authored 10 other books in Native
Studies, Race Relations, and Disability Studies. His two most recent books, co-written with
his older son Adam, are entitled Yes You Can! - A Guide for Parents of
Children with Disabilities and What=s Stopping You? Living Successfully with Disability.
Dr. Nagler is a past president of ARCH (the Advocacy Resource Centre for
the Handicapped), an agency that represents 45, 000 people with disabilities in
Ontario.
He lectures widely to diverse groups who are concerned with all aspects
of disability. He is renowned
internationally as a motivational speaker, having spoken to audiences in
Canada, the United Stated, Great Britain, Israel, Sweden, and Hungary. He is currently recognized by Canadian courts
as an expert in disability issues.
Mark Nagler is currently president of Nagler Disability Consulting
Services and he lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
